Concluding Thoughts

Hello reader, Overall, I found it incredibly difficult to stay off social media. I failed miserably a couple of times. I would say that I failed about 5+ times a day, however, I always snapped out of it after likek 30 seconds. There were a couple different things I noticed over the course of the fast. One was that I don't make as efficient use of my time as I would like to. I found myself doing more productive and helpful things during the fast, that I usually would of spent time on social media instead. I also realized how much social media dominated my communication with my friends. For a little while during the fast I felt as if I was disconnected from my friends, as I wasn't using Instagram to communicate with them anymore. However, I started just texting them or calling them or even going to where they were on campus, which felt a lot better than just sending each other memes. I think the thing I missed the most about social media was keeping track of soccer games and new...

The Implication

Hello readers, I have just completed the 3 day social media fast. Throughout the fast, I have realized that I have a very heavy habit of opening social media, when I have down time. I do not think I am addicted, but I have definitely engrained it into my day to day life. I think this really shows that I didn't have as much agency as I thought I had in the past. I use to think that most of the time I scrolled through social media was because I chose to not because I had formed a strong habit. It is a little discouraging to see myself open TikTok or Instagram out of habit, scroll for 30 seconds, then snap back into reality and realize that I breaking my fast. This happened so many times that I lost count. A couple of times I had to get my friends or my girlfriend to tell me that I am breaking my fast, because I wasn't consious of it on my own.  I think without social media I would be a lot more productive. At the times where I was conscious of the fast, and I was trying to figh...

Social Media Fast - Introduction and Reason

Hello reader, My name is Lorenzo Martinez. I'm from Dallas, TX, and I am currently studying Electrical Engineering at Texas Christian University. For the following 3 days I will be conducting a social media fast. I am quite optimistic about how well I will be able to perform for these next 3 days, however, I am still eager to see if I break or not. I've had a couple social media fasts in the past, however, I have realized that I am a lot more reliant on social media than I was then. I don't really spend a lot of time on social media to be completely honest, as myy classes and extracurriculars take up a majority of time, but those little moments were I have a break I almost exclusively scroll through Instagram or TikTok. It has become such an unconscious habit, that I don't even realize it until I'm a couple of scrolls in. I am hoping to be more conscious of that habit these next 3 days. Realistically, I believe that I will perform pretty well and maybe only break t...
